The Center for Spiritual Living will also serve as a top Sponsor and celebrate their 16th year of participation, along with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), who will celebrate 12 years of participation.

Hearts Rebuilding Homes 2012 starts on February 1st!

Looking for a creative and meaningful Valentine's Day gift idea this year?

Last year, Rebuilding Together Seattle started an inaugural Valentine's Day campaign called Hearts Rebuilding Homes. From February 1st through February 14th, we asked our supporters to make a difference in the lives of homeowners in need by making a donation to our organization, in honor of their loved ones.

Our first Hearts Rebuilding Homes campaign was a big success last year. Over 42 donors contributed over $2,400 in just 14 days! Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we were able to help four homeowners in need.

This year, Rebuilding Together Seattle is excited to celebrate the second year of Hearts Rebuilding Homes, starting on Wednesday, February 1st. Our supporters will have fourteen days to make a donation online (or by mail) to Rebuilding Together Seattle in honor of their loved ones.

After receiving confirmation of your donation, Rebuilding Together Seattle will mail a special card to your Valentine, notifying him/her of your donation. Later in the year, we'll send an email greeting to all donors and card recipients to let them know about the families we were able to help with your support.

Here are three families on our waiting list who need your support this Valentine's Day:

Elleree is an elderly homeowner who lives with her daughter and two grandchildren in South Seattle. She is a widow of a veteran. She needs new flooring, security improvements, bathroom updates including grab bars, new appliances and yard work.

John and Rosalinda have four children - two who are foster children. they live in Beacon Hill and need a new furnace, porch step repairs, grab bars and handrails, yard cleaning, plumbing fixes, and new windows.

Shawn and Katy are a younger couple living in West Seattle. Shawn has MS and Ankylosis Spondylitis. They have very high medical bills and need a lot of home repairs including windows, security improvements, bathroom updates for accessibility/mobility, new stove, and new windows.

Give the gift of a warm and safe home to a homeowner in need this Valentine's Day.

Rebuilding Together Seattle (www.rtseattle.org) is a nonprofit organization (located in South Lake Union) that provides free home repairs to low income homeowners and nonprofit facilities living from Tukwila to Everett. We serve the elderly, disabled, families with children, and veterans in need. Our mission is to bring volunteers and communities together to help low income homeowners live in warmth, safety, and independence.

Rebuilding Together Seattle has an ongoing Internship Program geared toward current college students (or recent graduates) looking to acquire experience in the nonprofit industry and other relevant fields. The intern is supervised by the RTS Director of Programs, and works on various projects, including Program, Development, Marketing/Social Media, and Outreach related tasks. Over the past three years, Rebuilding Together Seattle has worked with eight student interns who have made outstanding contributions to our organization. The Internship Program enables students to acquire significant experience in the nonprofit industry while greatly enhancing their professional skills, including (but not limited to): writing, reading, communication, project management, and computer skills. RTS Interns are given rewarding and challenging projects, and a chance to interact with hundreds of volunteers, donors, clients, and community leaders each month. Please read below to hear from a few of our former interns about their experiences!

Rebuilding Together Seattle is looking for a new intern who is interested in working at our office starting in late January or early February. Most interns have made a 3-4 month commitment to the organization, while others have extended their internship to a second term. In February, Rebuilding Together Seattle will start preparing for our 22^nd Annual Spring Rebuilding Day, our largest program event of the year where over 1,000 volunteers restore approximately 25 homes in one day. The intern will have an opportunity to work with the Director of Programs in helping plan for the event. In addition, Rebuilding Together Seattle will start planning for our annual fundraiser, which will require all hands on deck!

My favorite part about the RTS Internship is that all of the work, coordination and planning that we do goes towards helping families in need. Safe at Home in South Park

The RTS Safe at Home program did not slow down with the winter weather (maybe because our winter has been so great??), and we are so excited about all the projects going on thanks to our individual volunteers and our Safe at Home partners. Bill is a veteran who lives in a houseboat in South Park, just a quick walk away from the bridge that is undergoing reconstruction. One of the RTS Board Members, Tim Lane, is an engineer working on the bridge project and wanted to get the workers involved more in the South Park community. He and the South Park Bridge Construction Management team set to work on helping Bill with some much needed home repairs, funded by the Home Depot Foundation grant RTS received to help veterans in need.

The first project was covering Bill's roof with a tarp to get him through winter, with plans to return in the spring when they are able to replace the roof properly under good weather. The next projects will include re-constructing the porch stairs with railing and weatherproof his doors and windows.

Series Finale: Extreme Makeover Home Edition!

This Friday, January 13 at 8:00pm EST, ABC will be airing its two-hour episode finale of Extreme Makeover Home Edition! The series finale will highlight a Joplin, MO family whose home and lives have been devastated by a natural disaster.

Rebuilding Together Clay County and President's Circle Sponsor, Sears, were featured as part of this special series' finale, as they helped to rebuild Cunningham Park.

Here's a sneak peek at some of the work Rebuilding Together Clay County and Sears accomplished during their week in Joplin, as part of Extreme Makeover Home Edition:

- Constructed a new multi-purpose that accommodates various sports

- Installed a new playground for small children

- Demolished restroom buildings to transform into an open picnic pavilion

- Rolled out new sod for most of the park, planted trees, plants and flowers

Meet the RTS Staff: Claire Oatey

Introducing our Program & Development Intern, Claire Oatey! Claire has been at RTS since July and we are thrilled to have her on Board! Let's get to know Claire:

1. How did you first hear about Rebuilding Together Seattle?

The first time I really took the time to learn about RTS was when I came across an article in the Seattle Times last April. I had heard of RTS before but this article, which was describing the 25 homes that were rebuilt on Spring Rebuilding Day, caught my attention. At the time I was neck deep in my senior thesis and completely absorbed in my own world. Hearing about how the community back in my hometown was coming together to help their neighbors really touched me. The idea of returning to Seattle and giving back to my city after spending 4 years focusing fairly inward was really appealing. I contacted the RTS Executive Director, Margie, the next day!

2. Why do you like working at Rebuilding Together Seattle?

I love working at RTS! How many people can say that every day at work they laugh with their coworkers, watch two crazy dogs play with each other, and have their job choice reaffirmed by the tangible positive changes they witness in the lives of those they work to help?

3. Why do you believe in the mission of RTS?

I believe in the mission of RTS because you quickly learn that the transformation occurring during a Rebuilding Day is about so much more than the before and after of the home itself. It’s about the transformation of the lives of the homeowners. A safe and warm home brings them security, hope, and relief. I also believe in our mission because it’s about bringing the community together. It’s very easy in Seattle, and in any city, to get caught up in your own life and overlook the needs of people living across the city from you or even your neighbors down the street. During one of my first weeks at RTS, I previewed a home with our Director of Programs, Sarah, that was located just a few blocks away from where I grew up. I must have driven by that house a hundred times but I never really saw it. Here they were, a family so deserving o f help and practically my neighbors, and yet without RTS I’m not sure I would have ever connected with them.

4. What has been your favorite memory so far with RTS?

One of my favorite memories was presenting with former RTS board member, Mary Herche, at the Port of Seattle’s Veterans Day Celebration. The event was held to honor veterans who have served in the military, to introduce the new class of the Veterans Fellowship Program at the Port, and to showcase other organizations that support veterans and veteran causes. We were invited to talk about the RTS Veterans Program which was created in 2009 to help veteran homeowners and their families with vital home improvements. It was a great event and I was so happy that RTS was included. We hope that the event will lead to more connections in the veteran community and that we will ultimately be able to serve more homeowners who have served our country.

5. Tell us more about yourself – what do you like to do when you’re not at work?

I like to spend time with my housemates, my boyfriend, and my family! My older brother just moved back to Seattle this November after living in China for the past 8 years with his girlfriend (well, I should say wife—they got married on December 18^th!). My parents are pretty excited to have us both back in Seattle!

6. What are your hopes for RTS in years to come?

My biggest hope is that RTS will gain more and more exposure in the community so that soon Rebuilding Together Seattle will be a household name. The more well-know we are, the more likely homeowners who need our help will know where to seek it.

On Spring Rebuilding Day 2011, Atkinson Construction partnered with Gonzaga Alumni to renovate and repair the home of a veteran, Vicki, who lives in South Seattle. Although they did an incredible amount of work for SRD 2011 (incuding constructing a brand new ramp, painting the entire house, rewiring the electrical, moving the washer and dryer, decluttering, and tons of yard work, to name a few things), there were a couple items left that Atkinson felt they needed to complete. One was the drainage issue that left standing water in Vicki's basement every time it rained, and the other was a monstrous dead tree looming over her house and new ramp.

A couple weeks ago, AG Tree Service was out and took down the tree, giving everyone the opportunity to release a huge sigh of relief. Then, KLB Construction put in over $6,500 worth of work. Molly Villani, of Atkinson Construction, said that after putting in a new drainage system, "the crew had to go back to put in a mesh net at the end of the drain, so rodents and other creatures wouldn't make the drain a new home. They cleaned the gutters, the back yard, and placed some additional drain rock to tidy things up."

Vicki can now live in safety, without drainage issues, and enjoy her new home, thanks to the joint efforts of Atkinson Construction, KLB Construction, and AG Tree Service!

Rebuilding Together, Sears Near $16 Million Raised to Support Heroes at Home

Sears and Rebuilding Together reach milestones throughout 2011, ending the year with donation of Mini Cooper as latest support for Rebuilding Together

WASHINGTON, DC - December 14, 2011 - Rebuilding Together and Sears have raised nearly $16 million to help veteran homeowners and families in-need via a joint effort under Sears' Heroes at Home program that assists military families and veterans across the nation by making necessary repairs, improvements and modifications to their homes.

The Heroes at Home program has repaired veterans' homes and veteran centers across the country for more than five years. In October, Heroes at Home celebrated the 1,000th Veterans Rebuild, marking the milestone with the support of First Lady Michelle Obama, Dr. Jill Biden and their initiative "Joining Forces." This organizational milestone brought national attention to the plight of the nation's veterans, and the organizations' dedication to serving those who have served.

For the past several years, Sears customers have donated in stores and online to Rebuilding Together through the Heroes at Home Donation Drives. Sears has led many additional fundraising efforts to support Rebuilding Together's veteran housing projects. As a result of the collaborative campaigns, Sears raised more than $3.3 million in 2011.

"Rebuilding Together's successful collaboration with Sears success is evidenced through our recent milestones, and now we are completing the year with a Mini Cooper auction, the proceeds of which will support Heroes at Home," said Gary A. Officer, president and CEO of Rebuilding Together. "We look forward to developing new ways in which we can continue to support military families in need."

Rebuilding Together and Sears' additional collaborations in 2011 include:

- Sears and Rebuilding Together worked with NextGen, which donated a new modular home to a disabled veteran, helping to meet his critical, domestic needs

- Sears' 4th Annual Heroes at Home Donation Drive, giving Americans the option to make a donation to Rebuilding Together to support the Heroes at Home program, in any Sears store nationwide or online via a link at Sears.com/heroesathome

- Sears launched the national "Portraits of Heroes" song contest with country music singer and U.S. Marine Corps veteran Josh Gracin; the resulting song, "Can't Say Goodbye," is now available on iTunes, with all proceeds benefiting Rebuilding Together

- "Operation Rebuild for Heroes at Home," a social media contest that encouraged communities to help servicemen and women in need. RTS Energizer: Cathy Leon

The CBRE Project Leaders, Carolann Andrews and Peter Kelly chose one volunteer from the group of volunteers as their RTS Energizer- a person who goes above and beyond their commitment as a volunteer on the rebuilding day. Cathy Leon worked at the home of Julia and Floyd the weekend before the rebuilding day, to clean and prime the walls for painting, and the day after, to do the finishing touches.

"Cathy Leon’s enthusiasm and hard work makes a significant impact on our community," Carolann said. "Cathy met with the homeowners several times to go over the colors so that the paint she purchased was perfect. She worked with the paint crew volunteers to make sure they had everything they needed. Cathy’s leadership and knowledge made the paint project a huge success."

RTS accepts $2,000 check from the Bonneville Seattle Media Group

Today Rebuilding Together Seattle went to the Bonneville Seattle Media Group station to accept a $2,000 check during the December Charity of the Month presentation! Joining the presentation included Carl Gardner (VP, Market Manager, Bonneville Seattle) and Kevin Griffin (Director of Community Relations, Seattle Seahawks / Sounders FC).

Last month, Rebuilding Together Seattle partnered with CBRE for their first rebuilding day. What a huge success!! Not only did CBRE commit to a full day rebuilding day, but they also were out there for a pre-rebuilding day, and a post-rebuilding day, and many visits in between!

Throughout the whole process, Carolann Andrews, Volunteer Coordinator, and Peter Kelly, Project Manager, were on top of planning, organizing and executing the projects. Their hard work and positive attitude was an impressive testament to their commitment to giving back to the community.

Let's hear from Peter:

1. How did you get involved with RTS? My company, CBRE, connected with RTS for our charity endeavors, CBRE Cares. I was tabbed to be the Project Manager, and was happy to be selected. I’ve always wanted to be involved in something like this, but never really had or made the opportunity until now.

2. What do you enjoy most about working with our organization? The ability to help CBRE “organize” and focus our energy in a positive way was very helpful. I’m certain that we’ll work together again soon.

3. What do other volunteers say about RTS? The volunteers loved to see the fruits of their efforts in an immediate and tangible way. At the end of the day our “home” had been seemingly transformed in front of our eyes, and to see the happy faces of the homeowners made it all that much better.

4. Why do they want to volunteer their time? It seemed like everyone could relate to our homeowner’s “needs” and were just very pleased to be able to help someone and not expect anything in return. It just felt good!

5. What about RTS' mission are you most drawn to? I liked that their mission was to really “help” the affected person, not just to beautify their home.

1. How did you get involved with RTS?
CBRE, Inc. partnered with Rebuilding Together Seattle this year. I was fortunate to be chosen to work on this project.

2. What do you enjoy most about working with our organization?
RTS set-up the project for us and guided us along the way. We were able to meet the homeowners and they told us their story which helped us to understand why we were there. This connection made the whole experience more meaningful.

3. What do other volunteers say about RTS?
They were impressed with the process of selecting the project home. Being able to work with the homeowners from start to finish was very satisfying. The homeowners were so grateful and
expressed their appreciation to the volunteers every step of the way.

4. Why do they want to volunteer their time?
CBRE employees are dedicated to bettering the communities where they live and work. We had 30 volunteers within 24 hours of sending out the CBRE Cares Homebuilding project announcement. It started out as a great opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to a family in need and ended up being an enjoyable team- building event. We are all looking forward to next year’s home build project. The following volunteers took the Lead on different home projects to insure that all three event days were successful. Cathy Leon, Carolyn Davis, Dana Kelsie, Misty Hakola, Tenille Lively, Dan Stutz and our Project Manager, Peter Kelly. Boyce Construction, Holmes Electric and the tilers, Lou LaJeunesse, Greg Sylvia and Doug Wright spent several days contributing to the home rebuild.

5. What about RTS' mission are you most drawn to?
The homeowner’s lives changed dramatically four years ago due to a tragic accident. While they struggled to live a new life, the house was no longer a priority. We were able to give them back a little bit of their former life by making their home more accessible, safer and brighter. Now they are proud to let people back into their home.

Charlie has been involved with Rebuilding Together Seattle for just over three years now, and what a commitment he made right off the bat! Charlie joined the Board of Directors after participating in his company's first rebuilding day (Tarragon), and has since served as the Chair of the RTS Development Committee.

“We are very lucky to have Charlie’s support on our Board," Margie Thirlby, Executive Director, says. "Charlie took great initiative during his first year on the Board in helping expand the RTS Development Committee, and has served as our Chair for three years. Charlie has helped secured excellent volunteer, donor, and sponsor connections for our organization and is a treat to work with."

1. How did you first get involved with RTS?

I was first involved with RTS through a rebuilding project that was sponsored by my employer, Tarragon. It was such a great experience that I couldn’t see myself not being involved at some capacity. I love RTS’ mission and working with our homeowners.

2. What do you enjoy most about being a board member at RTS?

Working with appreciative homeowners, compassionate volunteers, and a driven RTS office and board.

3. What are your hopes for RTS in the years to come?

I would love to see RTS continue its strong pace of helping homeowners in need. I am excited about our progression in our “Safe at Home” year-round program as it is our avenue to help more folks in immediate need.

"...Our minds will be at ease knowing that our home is safer, more comfortable and even enjoyable to live in. We won’t have to feel guilty when our kids, especially Caleb with his gait issues, trip over our uneven floors. The kids will have even heat in the house with insulated windows to contain that heat and will no longer complain about the drafts. The tub can once again be used to help with easing pain, because the water heater will be able to keep up with filling the tub with warm water. Our roof will no longer leak. Our house will finally be heated by something other than a wood stove. The list of repairs that have been made overwhelms us.

That list is a two-ton weight off of our backs. It is one less thing to focus on or worry about. That ball doesn’t have to be thrown back up into the balls that we are trying to juggle. It will allow us to add a ball to that mix that has been dropped for far too long. It’s the ball that is labeled “family time.” Dad won’t be overwhelmed with the honey-do list and our very limited time together as a family can be for enjoyment. We are amazed, grateful, thankful, and overwhelmed with these blessings that you have provided.

CBRE Rebuilding Day!

Employees from CBRE completed an amazing rebuilding day yesterday, November 17th at the home of Julia and Floyd in the Genesee Park neighborhood of Seattle. This was Rebuilding Together Seattle's first partnership with CBRE and we could not have been more impressed with their work ethic, organization, and positive attitude.

Julia suffered a fall four years ago and is now wheelchair bound as a paraplegic. The changes to their lives left Floyd overwhelmed with housework. CBRE volunteers painted both bathrooms and the kitchen, cleaned the kitchen from top to bottom, removed clutter that had built up in the family's basement, cleaned up the front and back yards, installed a new kitchen range, updated several door hinges so Julia can more easily get in and out of the home, constructed a ramp to the basement entry way, updated much of the electrical system, and much much more!!

Julia was able to get into her basement, once a beloved work area, for the first time in four years thanks to the new ramp and cleaning. Huge thank you to Project Manager, Peter Kelly, and Volunteer Coordinator, Carolann Andrews!

Team Depot Volunteers Busy at Work!

Today 40 Team Depot volunteers are out in Skyway, helping Louella, the widow of an Army veteran, Alex. Louella married her husband, Alex Honory, in 1989. Alex was a veteran who served in the Army and later went to work at the SeaTac Airport. The Honory’s bought their current home in 2001, but since Alex passed away from a stroke in 2009, Louella has had a hard time keeping up with the maintenance of her home. Louella's granddaughter is currently serving in the Army.

Team Depot volunteers are tackling a list of home improvements, including new flooring, new kitchen appliances, cleaning, yard work, safety improvements, and more. Earlier this morning, First Gentleman, Mike Gregoire, stopped by to meet Louella and thank the volunteers.

Wells Fargo commits $1.2 million in Real Estate Owned Properties and $600,000 in cash donations to Rebuilding Together to help revitalize local neighborhoods

WASHINGTON, DC- Rebuilding Together today announced Wells Fargo's commitment to donate up to $1.2 million in real estate owned (REO) properties and $600,000 to help revitalize local neighborhoods hit hard by the challenging economy.

"This donation from Wells Fargo will make an important difference toward addressing housing challenges in several communities," said Gary A. Officer, president and CEO of Rebuilding Together. "While this is a substantial commitment from one of the largest mortgage and philanthropic companies in America, there are still substantial needs in many communities facing challenges that come with this housing crisis of epic proportions."

Wells Fargo will donate up to $1.2 million in REO properties to help stabilize distressed housing markets.

"Wells Fargo is proud to support Rebuilding Together's efforts to create affordable and sustainable housing for low-to-moderate income families," said Kimberly Jackson, executive director of the Wells Fargo Housing Foundation. "We hope more companies and individuals will get involved with supporting Rebuilding Together's mission that brings resources to neighborhoods seeking ways to address economic challenges including ones with the housing market."

With the commitment, Wells Fargo will donate a total of eight REO properties to Rebuilding Together affiliates in distressed markets including Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Denver. Rebuilding Together will repair those properties for sale to low to moderate income and first time home buyers. In addition, Wells Fargo is making a $600,000 grant commitment - including a 3:1 ratio match-cash challenge grant pledge up to $100,000 - to support Rebuilding Together's work in distressed housing markets.

Through the Wells Fargo Housing Foundation, Wells Fargo has stewarded more than $82 million and 4.5 million volunteer hours from team members in support of creating affordable housing and community revitalization programs. Wells Fargo Housing Foundation's Team Member Volunteer Program has mobilized more than 175,000 volunteers to build or refurbish 3,6oo homes in low-to-moderate income communities. In 2010, Wells Fargo Housing Foundation programs delivered a record $27 million, 1,507 discounted and 295 donated properties to support local affordable housing and community revitalization programs.

Volunteers Honor Veterans with Free Home Repairs

First Gentleman, Mike Gregoire, to lend a hand

SEATTLE (November 16, 2011) – Once again volunteers from Rebuilding Together Seattle and The Home Depot Foundation will come together to clean, rebuild, and repair the homes of three families of veterans in Seattle this month. The work is being made possible through a $25,000 grant from The Home Depot Foundation.

The kick off to Rebuilding Together Seattle’s 2^nd Annual Veterans Rebuilding Day will take place on Wednesday, November 16 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the home of Louella, the widow of a veteran (house located in Skyway at 6240 S. 118th Pl. Skyway, WA 98178). 40 local Home Depot employees will volunteer their time on Wednesday to help Louella Honory, a widow of a veteran. Louella married her husband, Alex Honory, in 1989. Alex was a veteran who served in the Army and later went to work at the SeaTac Airport. The Honory’s bought their current home in 2001, but since Alex passed away from a stroke in 2009, Louella has had a hard time keeping up with the maintenance of her home. Volunteers will provide home improvements, including new flooring, new kitchen appliances, cleaning, yard work, safety improvements, and more. Joining volunteers will be First Gentleman, Mike Gregoire (arriving at 10 a.m.).

In addition, the grant from the Home Depot Foundation will go towards helping Vietnam veteran Eddie Green and disabled veteran Bill Owens with necessary home improvements. In an effort to help others live independently in warmth and safety, Rebuilding Together Seattle focuses on providing low-income homeowners and non-profit facilities with critical repairs, modifications and energy-efficient upgrades at no cost to the individuals served.

“With more than 1,700 associates currently serving our country on Military Leave of Absence, support for our troops is something The Home Depot takes personally,” said Sherry Caraway, Community Affairs Manager. “That’s why The Home Depot is dedicated to supporting and honoring our men and women in uniform and their families through our business practices and volunteer donations.”

Rebuilding Together Celebrates 1000 Gulf Coast Homes Rebuilt During National Conference

WASHINGTON, DC – NOVEMBER 10, 2011 – Rebuilding Together, the nation’s leading nonprofit working to preserve affordable homeownership, is holding its 2011 Annual Conference in New Orleans, November 10 – 12. This year, Rebuilding Together also celebrates the completion of Rebuild 1000.

After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the Gulf Coast in 2005, Rebuilding Together created the initiative Rebuild 1000, a commitment to rebuild 1,000 hurricane-damaged and destroyed homes throughout the Gulf Coast. During Rebuilding Together’s National Conference, the 200 Rebuilding Together affiliates will join together to celebrate the success of Rebuild 1000.

The 1000th homeowner, Mr. Columbus, will be welcomed back into a newly renovated home on November 11. The Rebuilding Together Affiliate Network celebrates his homecoming, as well as the efforts of Rebuilding Together’s volunteers and sponsors in a ceremony, which Mr. Columbus, DIY Network’s Chris Grundy, and Mayor Mitch Landrieu will attend.

Rebuilding Together has three affiliates located throughout the Gulf Coast, who have a strong presence within their communities: Rebuilding Together New Orleans, Rebuilding Together Acadiana, and Rebuilding Together Calcasieu. They have collectively operated in their communities for over 50 years and continue to impact their communities.

“Rebuilding Together’s National Conference this year is especially important to our organization,” said Gary A. Board Member of the Month: Kristen Cramer

Kristen has served on the RTS Board of Directors for close to 6 years. During that time Kristen has witnessed great growth at RTS, and played a strong role in the process. Kristen is the Former Board Vice President and currently serves as the Chair of the Site Preview Team, regularly visiting the homes of homeowner applicants.

“Kristen has been an asset to our organization for many years," RTS Director, Margie Thirlby, said. "In addition to sharing her professional knowledge about home maintenance and repairs, Kristen has been an asset to our programs through her involvement with the Site Preview Team and managing rebuilding day projects. We can always count on Kristen to visit our project sites and give great updates on the work of our organization. Kristen has contributed greatly to the growth of Rebuilding Together Seattle in recent years, and has made an excellent commitment to her role as a Board member.”

1. How did you first get involved with RTS?

I was invited to participate in a Spring Rebuilding Day as an area coordinator by Jody Rogers who was then serving as interim program manager. This was an opportunity to see the organization in action. As a real estate professional, I found this to be an ideal fit for me to share my skills and give back to the community.

2. What do you enjoy most about being a board member at RTS?

Since I have joined the Board of RTS, there have been so many great people that have also joined. It is exciting to work with just caring devoted people. I am always inspired to want to contribute more. It has been exciting to watch the organization grow as we continue to serve more homeowners in need.

3. What are your hopes for RTS in the years to come?

My hopes for RTS are that we become the "go to" organization that other non profits and social service providers turn to when they encounter homeowners that are in need of home modifications and repairs. I hope that we will always have enough sponsors to take care of ALL the applicants and through our outreach locally and nationally, that Rebuilding Together will become known for the great service it provides the community.

Volunteer of the Month: Tony Ventrella

Tony first became involved with Rebuilding Together Seattle at the Sounders Rebuilding Day in June 2011. Tony was out interviewing Sounders players and the family receiving the help, and of course, making new friends. He followed up the rebuilding day with offering to emcee our annual fundraising event that fall, for free.

“Rebuilding Together Seattle was truly lucky to work with Tony this year for our annual fundraiser," RTS Executive Director, Margie Thirlby, said. "Not only was Tony a huge hit that night, but he contributed strongly to the success of our event, through his countless contributions before, during, and after our event. We are lucky to work with a community leader who not only believes in our mission and donates his time, but someone who is truly a kind, funny, and fantastic person to work with.”

Let's hear from Tony!!

1. Why did you choose to get involved with RTS?
I chose to get involved in RTS when I attended an event with SoundersFC.Com to produce a video involving some of the players and volunteers. I was impressed by the organization and of each volunteers' duties in and around the house, the positive attitude of everyone involved and the simplicity of getting right to the heart of a problem with a hands on effort. Also I thought Margie was really cute.
I enjoy the passion of the people involved in RTS. They are focused on their task and yet they have fun doing it.

2. What do you enjoy most about working with our organization?
My colleagues were also impressed with what they’ve seen of RTS on the day I mentioned and overall.

3. What do your colleagues or other volunteers say about RTS?

Volunteering your time is like taking some magic “tonic” that instantly works to make you feel better. There is no better feeling.

4. Why do they want to volunteer their time?
I’m most drawn to the direct approach of helping people and the minimal “red tape” involved.
