Volunteer of the Month: Dave Thomas
Dave pictured with RTS Program & Development Assistant, Claire Oatey
Dave Thomas, a volunteer through the Safe at Home program and the Project Manager of the Safeway Rebuilding Day, is our Volunteer of the Month for April!
Here's what Dave has to say about his experience with RTS:
1. How did you get involved with RTS?
I got involved with RTS about a year ago. I was looking for an organization that fit the type of work that I liked doing and made a positive impact on the people that we helped. I actually found out about RTS on a TV commercial and thought it was right up my alley. I have had a really good time helping out.
2. What do you enjoy most about working with our organization?
The thing I enjoy most is working with so many great volunteers and homeowners!
3. What do other volunteers say about RTS?
The people that I have worked with have had really nice things to say about the organization and are excited about doing future projects.
4. Why do they want to volunteer their time?
The volunteers think it is really awesome how people pull together to help people they don't even know and try to make a difference in someone's life.
5. What about RTS' mission are you most drawn to?
I like the fact that we are helping ordinary people that have had some bad luck and are trying their best to keep their homes from falling apart.

Thank you, Dave, for all the time and hard work you've put into helping homeowners maintain safe and healthy homes!

GiveBIG to Rebuilding Together Seattle TODAY!
TODAY IS THE DAY!
The Seattle Foundation's GiveBIG 2012 Event, a ONE DAY charitable giving event, began last night at midnight! Make a donation to Rebuilding Together Seattle before midnight tonight (Pacific Time) and your donation will go so much further!
Here's how it works:
Each donation made to the more than 1,300 nonprofit organizations profiled on The Seattle Foundation's website between midnight and midnight (Pacific Time) on May 2, 2012, will receive a pro-rated portion of the matching funds (or "stretch") pool. The amount of the "stretch" depends on the size of the stretch pool and how much is raised in total donations on GiveBIG day. For example, if a nonprofit organization receives 3 percent of the total donations during GiveBIG, then it will receive 3 percent of the stretch pool.
PLUS, throughout GiveBIG, donors will be chosen at random to have an additional $1,000 given to the charity that received their donation. The selected donor will also be eligible to win a Starbucks gift card worth $100!

"A mutually beneficial organization for all involved" (SRD recap from Board Member, Gary Ballas)
RTS Board Members, Gary Ballas (L) and Russ Schultz (R)
I had a great day yesterday [on Spring Rebuilding Day] as a roving Rebuilding Together Seattle Board Member supporting various projects in the North end. This is seriously one of the few organizations I've ever seen that is so mutually beneficial for all involved.
Homeowners in need get absolutely free home improvements focusing on Safety, Warmth and Independence to help them stay in their homes.
Businesses get to give back to their communities by providing leadership and virtually incidental funds to support projects. Beyond the goodwill factor, the payback is the morale boost from co-workers getting out of their daily grind and working side-by-side with people they may only know in passing on a major 1 day transformation for the benefit of someone else.
Volunteers get to apply their talents (and learn new ones) to help people that really need it and absolutely appreciate it. While not everyone is into the volunteer thing, I believe most people love to help out when there is something they can do. Somehow it's way more satisfying than any paid job.
Sponsors get to see tangible results in their own communities for the resources they contribute.
Rebuilding Together Seattle gets to help more people each year given an strong organization and a focus on applying every $ to the cause.
